Milly's work - Wood for Trees
This window has two layers and attempts to recreate the experience of walking through woods. It's two metres long, so it changes as you walk past it. I made it in two halves, it was too wide to handle in one go! The acid-etched side has gaps instead of glass inbetween - a nightmare to lead, but it does give the required illusion of depth.

Competitions galore...
There's a couple of exciting competitions for you to enter.
One is the annual Steven's Competition, which is quite a prestigious event, with £1000 first prize and - even better - a real commission to be won as well. This year's project is an internal screen in between a restaurant and a corridor in a residential home. It's a good one...
Interested? Cut and paste the link below into your browser (Internet Explorer etc) and download the information:
http://www.worshipfulglaziers.com/stevens_competition.asp
Secondly, Warm Glass are sponsoring their annual prize. The brief for this year is 'MOVEMENT', and your entry must include an element of warm glass work (ie fusing or slumping). The closing date is December 31st. Cut and paste the link below for further information:

Harry Hibberd's work
'Hanging Seven' is Harry's latest in his series of mathematically themed pieces. Some of you might have seen this in the show last year - but look again! It now has a new and improved glass hanger, rather than the perspex one of yesteryear... Roll on 'Hanging 100'...
Harry was impressed with Carol Arnold's tree that she put on the blog - you'll find in in the archives somewhere... This is a photo of his first leaded piece of work, again taking trees as a theme.

Lee's Biennale 2006 pix
If you think you're obsessive - this detail of 'Family Time' by Jessica Townsend shows casting in minute detail... The whole piece was a complete dolls house fitted out like House Beautiful.
Iestyn Davies is a blower who has recently become interested in using LEDs in his work. These hanging shapes were lit by 100s of them...
Sally Dunnett fused and slumped this bowl - here you can see the dichroic details.
Ta for the photos, Lee.

Mivart Open Studios - this weekend!
There's a head of steam building up at Mivart Street, Easton, as we install our exhibits and clean up a years' worth of dirt in our studios. It's looking good.
I'm not doing anything glassy. My work's about the closure of Greenbank chocolate factory, but Scott (stained glass tutor at Queen's Road) will be there working on his latest commission.
Friday 7-10pm, Sat and Sun 11-5pm. You're welcome anytime, my 'home' is Studio number 31.
See you there!

Stevens Competition
Here are the Steven's Competition entries from Queens Road, this time with the designs, so that you can see the relationship between design and glass. The selected sections that have been made into glass are outlined on the designs. It's always interesting to see what happens in the translation from paper to glass.

Buckfast Abbey Glass
Here's another go.
The two top images are the main panels in the new part of the abbey. The two lower ones are in the older main part.
The new panels are "tiles of glass" about 1 inch thick, and set into concrete or epoxy resin. The tiles are chipped round the edges to give the panels an extra sparkle.
The Abbey, shop etc is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Groups can get one of the monks to gve them a talk about Abbey life, an interesting experience!

Enamelling on glass workshop
For those of you that didn't see the results of the enamelling workshop - taken by Penny Somerville over two Saturdays - here are some photos of some of the work produced, courtesy of Julia Rowe.
One of the exciting things that emerged was the use of the engraving tool and the abrading process BEFORE the enamelling is fired. This adds another dimension to the finished result - opacity and texture in the case of abrading and a sketchy, drawn line with the engraving tool. Of course you can use these two processes after the enamel has been fired too.
Happy experimenting!

Exhibition - Centrespace 13-18 May
This sounds interesting - all about stuff they've found whilst investigating hidden spaces underneath Centrespace. For those who've never been, it's down a little alley off Corn St, near Stanfords.
Mollie Meager - new work
This contemporary glass work is in a private house in Totterdown. It's based on a waterfall and is attempting to create a calm feeling at the bottom to facilitate the owners' meditation practice. Mollie has used handmade glass from English Antique, which is then etched, enamelled, stained and engraved. The textural qualities are fantastic and her drawn explorations are an indication of the creative process that takes place before starting work with the glass. What do you think?

Buckfast Abbey Stained Glass
I've recently seen the beautiful stained glass at Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh in Devon.
I've tried to post some pictures, but the machine doesn't like it and I've run out of patience. Will it work next time?
