At last this sundial got finished and installed at Nailsea Court. (Its a copy of a 17th century one which was stolen after a fire in the 1970's).I've been working on this dial for over a year now - it's plain glass, etched, enamelled, painted, and silver stained.
Scary moment as the sun came out just when we were putting it in - and it showed the right time to within 5 minutes or so! (you have to correct for longitude and time of year first)The time reads quarter past 12

Art and glass in Gloucester

Esteemed Student Cathy Steed sent me this information about art and
glass in her neck of the woods. So if anyone fancies a trip to Gloucester, you know where to go...

Our inspiration often comes from the natural world so thought I
would give a plug to my local museum/art gallery 'Nature in Art' a
couple of miles outside Gloucester. It is well worth a visit and
does exactly what it says on the tin. The art is both inside and out
in the grounds and covers many different mediums. They usually have
a visiting artist in residence, there is a good cafe and a shop
selling related books and posters and also artists materials. You
can even get in half-price by simply mentioning that you have heard
about the museum through an 'arts ambassador' (my other half, John
Steed) when you buy your tickets. Visit the website to find out more

Whilst in the neighbourhood Gloucester Cathedral is well worth a
visit. The Great East Window c1350 vies with York Minster in its
claim to be the largest medieval window in England. The South
Ambulatory Chapel has a wonderful modern set of windows by Tom Denny
(1992) - the picture's on the Cathedral's website just don't do it
justice:

The Cathedral is slap bang in the middle of Gloucester just a short walk
from Westgate Street where there is a great shop called 'Made in
Gloucestershire'. The shop sells some wonderful stuff: baskets,
pottery, jams, scarves, cards, furniture, bags, cosmetics and, of
course, stained glass.

If you really want to make a day of it travel 8 miles west of
Gloucester to Newent to visit the Cowdy gallery - see the link on
the right.

Westbury Park Methodist Church

I attach some pictures of some interesting glass in our church - Westbury Park Methodist on the corner of Etloe Road and Berkeley Road.

There is one of the John Wesley panel and a detail from underneath it. Also there is a typical roundel. Hope you like them. I have some spare glass available which is the colours and sizes of the south window detail if any one would like some.

If there is interest on the blog I thoght I might put up some more pictures - perhaps some from St Alban's church too.

A Really Good Competition...

Remember I mentioned the tenth anniversary of the Contemporary Glass Society (see link on right) and how they were going to be organising glass related celebrations in the South West?

Well, one such event is a selected exhibition to be held at Devon Guild of Craftsmen - and women! - in September. The deadline is February 1st, so get making and photographing and sending off applications...

Call to all arts and crafts Students of 16 and over attending part time courses in colleges, adult community or further education in Great Britain on both accredited and non-accredited, public and private courses. Equally, this also applies to Students attending V&A Workshops.

Entries should not be in a medium in which you have a professional qualification or in one which represents your main occupation.

Participants create a work of art inspired by the collections of either the Victoria & Albert Museum, South Kensington, London or the V&A Museum Of Childhood, Bethnal Green, London.

Entries are judged by a panel of curators and the winners and other selected works are displayed in the museum of their inspiration. Winners in their category also receive a prize.

Milly's work - Wood for Trees

This window has two layers and attempts to recreate the experience of walking through woods. It's two metres long, so it changes as you walk past it. I made it in two halves, it was too wide to handle in one go! The acid-etched side has gaps instead of glass inbetween - a nightmare to lead, but it does give the required illusion of depth.

10 x 10 - A Celebration of Contemporary Glass

Following a successful bid to the Lottery through the Arts Council of England, the CGS are pleased to announce the launch of the above, which will include a number of events in the South West in 2007.

10 x 10 - A Celebration of Contemporary Glass is funded by Arts Council England through its Grants for the Arts programme for individuals and organisations.
From 26th August to 4th November 2007 CGS will be promoting a number of events in the South West of England, together with many partners, to celebrate its 10th Anniversary.


Included in this extensive programme will be;


• An open submission Glass Exhibition entitled SIDE by SIDE, at Bovey Tracey from 22nd September to 4th November 06, in partnership with The Devon Guild of Craftsmen


• A Glass Conference “Looking into Glass” at the Eden Project
28th – 30th September


This major celebration of Contemporary Glass has been made possible by a successful bid to the Lottery through the Arts Council of England and the enthusiasm of CGS members and their creative partners.

Bristol exhibition featuring Queens Road student

Johnny de Mearns is exhibiting in a group show at Centrespace in the middle of town (down the alleyway immediately to the right of Stamfords). Johnny will be showing glass, so try and get along if you can.

Harry Hibberd's work

'Hanging Seven' is Harry's latest in his series of mathematically themed pieces. Some of you might have seen this in the show last year - but look again! It now has a new and improved glass hanger, rather than the perspex one of yesteryear... Roll on 'Hanging 100'...




Harry was impressed with Carol Arnold's tree that she put on the blog - you'll find in in the archives somewhere... This is a photo of his first leaded piece of work, again taking trees as a theme.

Iestyn Davies is a blower who has recently become interested in using LEDs in his work. These hanging shapes were lit by 100s of them...

Mivart Open Studios - this weekend!

There's a head of steam building up at Mivart Street, Easton, as we install our exhibits and clean up a years' worth of dirt in our studios. It's looking good.

I'm not doing anything glassy. My work's about the closure of Greenbank chocolate factory, but Scott (stained glass tutor at Queen's Road) will be there working on his latest commission.

Friday 7-10pm, Sat and Sun 11-5pm. You're welcome anytime, my 'home' is Studio number 31.

Mould-making workshop

If grovelling about in bags of unidentified substances in the rain and dark at Queens Road isn't enough for you... You can go on a mould-making course in Wiltshire. Only two places left!

MOULDMAKING TECHNIQUES FOR KILNWORKED GLASS

On this 5 day course Bill will introduce the technique of mould making
to produce slumped glass in the kiln.

The course is aimed at all levels of ability and includes techniques for trapping objects in glass, etching, slumping and fusing glass.
Many applications and a very practical course with students taking home final work.

Bill has tutored glass at Urchfont for 4 years with many students returning each year to develop and increase their glassmaking skills.
Bill also teaches in Cardiff and Porthmadog, Wales and has exhibited work throughout Europe, Japan and New York. 2 places remain on this course.Non residential also available.
